Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faced a significant setback in the regional elections on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, marking her first electoral defeat since assuming office in 2022. The rightist bloc, led by Meloni, lost power as Alessandra Todde, supported by the left-leaning 5-Star Movement and the Democratic Party (PD), emerged victorious with 45.4% of the vote, edging out Meloni's candidate Paolo Truzzu, who secured 45.0%.
Todde's victory, alongside PD leader Elly Schlein and former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte of the 5-Star Movement, marks a turning point in Sardinian politics. Schlein remarked that "the winds are changing," highlighting the shift in power dynamics on the island. Todde's win not only secures her place as the first female president of Sardinia but also as the first president from the 5-Star Movement in any region.
The triumph of the centre-left coalition in Sardinia signifies the first flip of a region from the right since 2015, providing a morale booster for opposition parties ahead of upcoming regional and national elections. Francesco Galietti, founder of Policy Sonar, noted that Sardinia's results have debunked the myth of Meloni's political invincibility, indicating a potential challenge for the rightist bloc in future elections.
Despite Meloni's dominance in previous regional elections, the choice of Truzzu as the candidate for Sardinia proved to be an unpopular decision, leading to the bloc's defeat. While the rightist coalition, comprising Meloni's Brothers of Italy, the League, and Forza Italia, still controls the majority of regions in Italy, the loss in Sardinia raises concerns about the stability of the coalition.
The outcome in Sardinia has raised questions about the future of Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League, whose party suffered a significant decline in the region compared to the 2019 elections. On the other hand, the success of the 5-Star Movement and the PD in Sardinia showcases the potential strength of a united opposition front, despite their past differences, in challenging the rightist bloc at the local and regional levels.
With the next regional election scheduled in Abruzzo on March 10, where the PD and 5-Star Movement have once again formed an alliance, the results in Sardinia have injected new momentum into the opposition's campaign. Meloni's Brothers of Italy maintains a lead in national polls, with the PD and 5-Star Movement closely behind, setting the stage for a competitive political landscape in Italy as the country gears up for future elections.
