In a significant financial boost, Lucid Group Inc. has secured a $1 billion cash injection from its major investor, an affiliate of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The investment from Ayar Third Investment Co. comes in the form of a private placement for convertible preferred stock and will be utilized for capital expenditure and working capital needs, the company announced on Monday.
The electric carmaker's shares surged by 7% following the news, signaling positive market sentiment towards the infusion of funds. The capital injection is a timely lifeline for Lucid, which has faced challenges in scaling its production output amidst a competitive electric vehicle market. Despite its struggles, Lucid remains one of the few U.S.-based pure-play EV companies, emphasizing its potential within the industry.
Morgan Stanley analysts, led by Adam Jonas, view the fresh investment from the Saudi affiliate as a modestly positive development for Lucid. The backing from Ayar Third Investment Co. reinforces the commitment towards supporting the company, particularly at a time when the EV segment is witnessing rapid evolution and intense competition.
Following its listing in a reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in July 2021, Lucid has navigated financial challenges, reporting losses and a decrease in cash and cash equivalents. However, the company emphasized its liquidity position in the latest earnings statement, asserting its ability to sustain operations at least into 2025.
The latest cash injection from Saudi investors, building upon previous investments, is expected to provide a sense of stability for Lucid as it continues its operations and works towards enhancing its production capacity. With the backing of the Public Investment Fund and a renewed focus on operational efficiency, Lucid aims to solidify its position in the dynamic electric vehicle market.
