In a recent survey conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), it has been revealed that consumer confidence in India has reached its highest level since mid-2019. The survey reflects a positive trend in consumers' perception of their current economic situation, with sentiments on the general economic situation and employment showing significant improvement. This sustained recovery in consumer confidence is a promising indicator for the overall economic landscape of the country.
The survey also unveiled that the 'future expectations index', which gauges consumer sentiment for the upcoming 12 months, has also improved to its highest level since mid-2019. This indicates that consumers have a positive outlook on the economic trajectory of the country in the near future. The optimistic consumer sentiment aligns with the RBI's projection of a robust 7% growth rate for the Indian economy in 2024-25, showcasing a promising outlook for economic expansion.
Furthermore, the survey on household inflation expectations revealed that consumers anticipate a moderation in inflation from current levels. This expectation bodes well for stable pricing and economic stability moving forward. Additionally, the data showed an increase in capacity utilization in the manufacturing sector, rising to 74.7% in October-December 2023 from 74% in the previous quarter. This uptick indicates a strengthening manufacturing sector, which is crucial for overall economic growth.
Governor Shaktikanta Das emphasized the positive outlook on investment activity, citing factors such as a broad-based upturn in private capex, robust government expenditure, healthy bank and corporate balance sheets, and increasing capacity utilization. These factors collectively contribute to a favorable environment for investment and economic growth in the coming years. With consumer confidence on the rise and various economic indicators showing positive trends, the future looks bright for the Indian economy.
