In a significant political development in Slovakia, Peter Pellegrini, a key ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, appears set to clinch the country’s presidential election. Pellegrini, a former premier and member of Fico’s ruling coalition, secured a commanding lead with 55.9% of the vote, as per the latest statistics office data. His opponent, diplomat Ivan Korcok, garnered 44.1% of the vote, with leading newspapers already calling the race for Pellegrini.
If confirmed, Pellegrini's victory would bolster Fico's authority, making it easier to advance legislation and make key appointments within the government. Fico, who has faced public criticism and EU scrutiny for his policies on corruption, media independence, and military support to Ukraine, would benefit from having a trusted ally in the presidency.
During his campaign, Pellegrini emphasized his role in driving through judicial reforms and accused his opponent, Korcok, of advocating for actions that could lead the country into conflict. This contrasts with Korcok’s stance, which supported Kyiv and military aid to Ukraine, drawing attention to the divergent views within Slovak politics on international relations.
Pellegrini's political journey has been closely intertwined with Fico and the Smer party. Initially, a member of Smer, he formed his own political group, Voice, ahead of parliamentary elections in 2020. Despite earlier distancing himself from Fico, Pellegrini rejoined the coalition last year, aligning his positions more closely with the prime minister’s agenda after his election victory.
With a career spanning almost two decades in various government roles, Pellegrini’s unwavering loyalty to Fico has earned him the reputation of a "yes-man" among some critics. His ascent from a parliamentary assistant to his impending presidency showcases a formidable trajectory within Slovakia’s political landscape, signaling the consolidation of power within Fico’s inner circle.
