In response to the Federal Aviation Administration's safety review, United Airlines Holdings Inc. has announced the delay of two new routes. The route between Newark, New Jersey, and Faro, Portugal, originally scheduled to begin on May 24, will now be postponed until the summer of 2025. Additionally, the launch of the route between Tokyo and Cebu, Philippines, has been pushed from July 31 to October 27.
These adjustments highlight the impact of the FAA's heightened scrutiny on United Airlines' expansion plans. The regulatory review was prompted by a series of recent incidents that drew public attention, including an aircraft running off a runway in Houston and a wheel detaching from a plane shortly after takeoff. The aviation industry has been on high alert since a fuselage panel detached during an Alaska Airlines flight on January 5.
Recent reports from Bloomberg suggested that the FAA is considering limiting United's growth opportunities, potentially by restricting new routes and preventing the airline from operating newly received aircraft with paying customers. Following this speculation, the FAA announced an increase in oversight of United Airlines, resulting in the delay of certain operational activities. United is currently conducting its own internal review in response to these developments.
A spokesperson from United Airlines confirmed that the changes to the flight schedule are directly linked to the FAA's safety review, which has impacted some certification processes. Passengers affected by these delays are being offered the option to receive full refunds or to be rebooked on partner airlines at no additional cost. As the carrier navigates through this period of regulatory scrutiny, it remains committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of its customers.
