Analysts at Robert W. Baird are predicting that Tesla Inc. may be on track for another quarter of declining vehicle sales, following a surprising drop in the first three months of this year. According to Ben Kallo, who rates Tesla's stock as a buy, the electric carmaker is facing a challenging comparison to the same period last year, which could result in a 4.6% decrease in vehicle deliveries in the second quarter. This forecast indicates a potential continuation of the downward trend in sales for Tesla.
Kallo noted in a recent report that the overall demand environment for Tesla vehicles has weakened, attributing this decline to factors such as the high interest rate environment. CEO Elon Musk has also acknowledged the difficulty of boosting sales in the current economic conditions, suggesting that this trend could persist at least through the first half of the year. These challenges have led some Wall Street analysts, like Colin Langan from Wells Fargo, to question Tesla's growth prospects, dubbing the company as a "growth company with no growth."
Despite these concerns, Kallo pointed to Musk's upcoming announcement of a robotaxi on August 8 as a potential catalyst for a turnaround in Tesla's fortunes. The analyst pointed out that previous product reveals by Musk have had a positive impact on the company's stock performance. As a result, Kallo has revised his outlook on Tesla's stock, no longer considering it a bearish pick. The designation was initially applied after a legal setback in January related to Musk's pay package.
Following a 4.9% surge in Tesla's shares on Monday, the stock experienced a slight dip of up to 0.8% in pre-market trading on Tuesday. Despite this fluctuation, Tesla's stock has suffered a 30% decline since the beginning of the year, reflecting broader investor concerns about the company's sales trajectory. As Tesla navigates ongoing challenges in the market, all eyes will be on Musk's upcoming announcement and its potential impact on the company's performance going forward.
