In a rare public comment about his future career plans, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced that he intends to continue serving as a Member of Parliament even if his Conservative Party were to lose the upcoming UK general election. The revelation came during an interview on the popular television program, Loose Women.

When asked whether he would consider stepping down as an MP in the event of an electoral defeat, Sunak firmly stated, "Of course I'm staying. I love being an MP. I cherish my constituents, and I adore my home in North Yorkshire." This is the first time Sunak has explicitly addressed his intentions should the Tories face a loss at the hands of the opposition Labour Party.

Current polls indicate that the Conservatives are trailing the Labour Party by a significant margin, with a gap of more than 20 points in several national surveys. As a result, a UK-wide vote is expected to take place by the end of January. Sunak's predecessor, Liz Truss, continued to serve as an MP after being removed from her position, but former Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned from Parliament less than a year after losing his premiership.

The last Conservative prime minister to suffer defeat at the hands of Labour, John Major in 1997, remained in his role as an MP until he retired in 2001. Despite this historic precedent, speculations about Sunak's future plans persist, with rumors suggesting a return to a career in finance if the Conservatives were to lose power. It is worth noting that a Conservative defeat would likely trigger a leadership contest within the party.

Sunak's declaration to remain as an MP demonstrates his commitment to his constituents and his passion for public service. However, skeptics question whether this statement will be enough to dispel the ongoing speculation surrounding his potential exit from politics and reentry into the financial industry. Only time will tell whether Sunak will choose to forge a new path or continue his already impressive political journey.
