Following the unveiling of Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ budget on May 14th, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese received a positive boost in personal approval ratings, with support for his Labor government also on the rise. According to a recent Newspoll survey, backing for the center-left Labor party reached 52% on a two-party preferred basis, while the opposition Liberal-National Coalition saw a slight decline to 48%. This marks a notable shift from the previous poll where Labor held a narrow lead at 51% compared to the Coalition's 49%.
Albanese’s personal approval rating saw a significant uptick to 47%, now equaling his disapproval rating, showing his best performance since a dip in ratings last October following the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum defeat. The positive reception follows the unveiling of budget measures aimed at providing relief to Australian households grappling with the escalating cost of living. Among these measures is a A$300 per household rebate on power bills, intended to ease financial burdens.
The budget outlined by Treasurer Chalmers forecasts a consecutive surplus for the year ending June 30, before transitioning back into deficit due to increased government spending over the subsequent four years. While Albanese and Chalmers have defended the budget as prudent and necessary, economists have cautioned that the surge in spending could potentially worsen inflationary pressures, prompting the Reserve Bank to maintain higher interest rates for an extended period.
In response to concerns regarding inflation, Prime Minister Albanese emphasized that the budget aims to alleviate cost of living pressures while concurrently reducing inflation. Treasury estimates suggest that the power bill rebates alone could result in a 0.5% reduction in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), underscoring the government's commitment to balancing economic stimulus with price stability.
Furthermore, Albanese's leadership was reaffirmed in the poll, with 52% of voters expressing a preference for him as prime minister over the center-right opposition leader, Peter Dutton. This represents Albanese's strongest endorsement since July 2023, reflecting growing confidence in his ability to steer the country through economic challenges and alleviate the burden on Australian households.
