In a strategic move to bolster its presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, Canadian travel company WestJet Group, under the ownership of private equity firm Onex Corp., recently acquired low-cost carrier Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations. The acquisition has paved the way for WestJet to enhance its service offerings in warm-weather destinations, with plans to fly to 39 locations in Latin America and the Caribbean this year — a notable increase from the previous year.

With a focus on flights from Western Canada, particularly initiating new routes from Manitoba and Saskatchewan to various US cities, WestJet aims to solidify its position in the region. The company is set to integrate Sunwing's operations seamlessly and estimates that half of all flights from Canada to the "Latin Caribbean" markets will be operated by WestJet. However, it has decided to scale back on certain Eastern Canada routes to better allocate resources and streamline operations.

Furthermore, WestJet is poised to expand its capacity with the introduction of new Boeing 737 Max 10 aircraft. With an increased seating capacity of 212 seats per plane — an upgrade from the current 189-seat Boeing 737 Max 8 model, the company foresees a notable seat-cost advantage. This enhancement will enable WestJet to offer more competitive fares while maintaining efficiency and optimizing its service quality.

As WestJet Group orchestrates these strategic initiatives, including route expansions, fleet upgrades, and integration of acquired entities, the company is positioning itself for sustained growth and success in the competitive aviation industry landscape.
