In a recent survey conducted by research group Krutham, it was found that the majority of investors, both local and foreign, are anticipating a stable coalition led by the African National Congress (ANC) after the upcoming May 29 elections in South Africa. This coalition is expected to include the business-friendly Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and potentially other smaller parties, ensuring policy stability and boosting investor confidence.

The survey, which gathered insights from 127 respondents primarily comprised of fund managers and bankers, highlighted that most investors believe the ANC will opt for a coalition with minor opponents rather than collaborating with its main rivals. This decision is likely to last between two to five years, providing a sense of continuity and predictability in the country's governance.

The prospect of an ANC-led coalition with the IFP has been well received by investors, as the IFP is viewed as unlikely to push for significant changes to the current economic policies spearheaded by President Cyril Ramaphosa. Recent positive developments, such as the reduction in power cuts and ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing private sector involvement in key industries, have contributed to a growing sense of optimism among market participants.

According to Peter Attard Montalto, Krutham's managing director, investor sentiment is increasingly positive, with many recognizing the potential benefits of a stable coalition government. The South African rand has experienced a notable rally against the dollar in recent weeks, reflecting the growing confidence in the country's political outlook.

While polls suggest that the ANC is expected to secure around 45.5% of the vote, surpassing earlier projections, the opposition parties such as the Democratic Alliance and the Economic Freedom Fighters are also anticipated to perform reasonably well. Despite these dynamics, the overarching sentiment among investors remains focused on the likelihood of a constructive coalition arrangement that prioritizes policy continuity and economic stability.

Looking ahead to the election outcomes, the willingness of parties like the IFP and the DA to consider collaboration with the ANC underscores the importance of fostering unity and cooperation in shaping South Africa's future trajectory. As the political landscape continues to evolve, investors are cautiously optimistic about the potential for sustained growth and progress under a stable coalition government led by the ANC.
