A volcano on the eastern island of Halmahera in Indonesia, Mount Ibu, unleashed a powerful eruption on Saturday, sending a massive five-kilometer-high ash cloud into the sky, as reported by Indonesia's volcanology agency, PVMBG. This eruption, which occurred at 11:03 a.m. local time, marks a continuation of heightened volcanic activity that began in April, with a series of explosions taking place in May.

In response to the eruption, authorities have urged residents and tourists to maintain a safe distance of at least 7 km from the active crater due to the thick and expansive ash column moving southwest. Videos shared by the agency depict Mount Ibu spewing ash, which gradually thickens before dispersing in the air. Meanwhile, the country's disaster management agency, BNPB, has issued warnings about potential secondary disasters such as flash floods and cold lava flow.

BNPB emphasized the need for local authorities to be prepared for these disasters, especially considering the current potential for moderate to heavy rainfall in the region, as predicted by the nation's meteorology agency. Officials highlighted the importance of promptly clearing any debris left behind by the eruption to prevent hazards, as heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods, causing significant damage and posing threats to lives.

Mount Ibu has been under the highest alert level since May 16, contributing to a series of volcanic eruptions across Indonesia, a country situated along the volatile Pacific "Ring of Fire" with a significant number of active volcanoes. The recent devastating flash floods and cold lava flow from Mount Marapi in West Sumatra serve as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for preparedness and vigilance in vulnerable areas amidst heightened volcanic activities.
