Chile’s central bank Governor Rosanna Costa and Finance Minister Mario Marcel raised concerns about obstacles to the nation's economic recovery during an event on Thursday. Costa highlighted uncertainties surrounding the strength of the US economy and global geopolitical tensions, which are making the central bank tread cautiously as it aims to bring inflation down to target levels. Additionally, local challenges such as impending electricity price hikes are also being considered.

Marcel echoed Costa’s sentiments, drawing attention to the upcoming electricity price rises and criticizing the slow progress of the government's key bills in Congress, particularly legislation aimed at improving pension payments. He expressed disapproval towards proposals for another round of early pension withdrawals, warning that such a move could jeopardize the ongoing economic recovery efforts.

The Chilean economic policymakers are diligently working to steer the nation’s recovery back on track after a period of near-stagnation in 2023. The central bank continues its cycle of interest rate cuts while witnessing an increase in foreign direct investment. However, certain sectors like construction are still grappling with challenges, as indicated by monthly drops in a key activity gauge for March and April.

In April, Congress approved legislation outlining gradual increases in electricity tariffs that had been kept low since the social unrest in late 2019. The government also plans to provide subsidies to support vulnerable households amidst the rising costs.

Governor Costa emphasized that the drive to bring inflation back to the 3% target is ongoing, with anchored consumer price estimates providing flexibility for further policy adjustments. She suggested the need for additional interest rate cuts to support the economic recovery.

Traders anticipate a quarter-point rate cut on June 18, a more conservative move compared to the previous reductions of 50, 75, and 100 basis points. The series of early pension withdrawals during the pandemic injected around $50 billion into the Chilean economy, fueling consumer demand and pushing inflation to its highest level in thirty years. Amidst these challenges, policymakers are striving to navigate through uncertainties and maintain economic stability in Chile.
