In response to a weaker-than-expected showing in the recent European Parliament elections, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has undertaken a cabinet reshuffle to address the concerns raised by the outcome. While Mitsotakis' New Democracy party emerged victorious in the elections, securing a 28.3% share of the vote and outperforming the main opposition party Syriza, the results fell short of their own target of 33%. The low voter turnout of just above 41% marked a record low for Greece, with some supporters of New Democracy shifting towards far-right groups.
Reflecting on the election outcome, Mitsotakis acknowledged in a recent Bloomberg interview that his administration had failed to adequately connect the issues in Europe with those in Greece. Concerns over the high cost of living, healthcare, and public transportation were highlighted as key everyday challenges facing the Greek population. In response, a cabinet reshuffle was deemed necessary to address these pressing issues and strengthen the government's response.
One of the key changes in the new cabinet lineup is the appointment of Theodoros Livanios as the Interior Minister, tasked with overseeing domestic affairs. Takis Theodorikakos steps into the role of Development Minister, responsible for controlling product prices and fostering economic growth. Niki Kerameus takes on the position of Labor Minister, while Nikos Panagiotopoulos assumes the role of Migration Minister. Kostas Tsiaras is appointed as the Minister of Rural Development and Food, highlighting the government's focus on agricultural and rural issues.
While key positions such as Economy, Foreign Affairs, and Defense remain unchanged, the reshuffle signals Mitsotakis' commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Greece and responding to the concerns raised by the recent elections. As the government moves forward with its new team, all eyes will be on how these changes will impact policy implementation and address the pressing issues affecting the Greek population.
