In an exciting development for the aviation industry, Qatar Airways is on the verge of finalizing their purchase of a significant stake in RwandAir as soon as next month, as per the Financial Times and senior executives familiar with the negotiations. This strategic partnership is anticipated to not only boost Rwanda's aviation sector but also enable RwandAir to enhance its operations and fleet, leveraging Qatar Airways' extensive network and expertise. Yvonne Makolo, the CEO of RwandAir, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, highlighting the potential for growth and development it brings to the central African country.
While Qatar Airways refrained from providing a comment on the matter, the Financial Times reported that the partnership between Qatar and Rwanda has been in the works for five years. The progression of the deal has faced delays, partially attributed to the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and Qatar's responsibilities in hosting the upcoming Fifa World Cup. Boeing projects a significant surge in intra-African passenger traffic over the next two decades, underscoring the strategic importance and timing of this alliance between Qatar Airways and RwandAir.
Back in February 2020, Bloomberg News reported that Qatar Airways had intentions to acquire a 49% stake in Rwanda's national carrier, signaling the preliminary stages of what now seems to be a promising collaboration set to reshape the aviation landscape in the region.
