Amid scorching temperatures and relentless wildfires, Greek authorities have issued evacuation orders for villages in the Peloponnese region as properties continue to be threatened by the flames. The country, enduring one of its hottest years on record, is facing a state of emergency as firefighters struggle to contain over 45 blazes fueled by strong winds and temperatures soaring up to 40C (104F).
The escalating crisis has prompted Athens to close its parks and residents to remain on high alert. Firefighters are facing formidable challenges, with wind speeds exceeding 95 kilometers per hour hindering aerial firefighting operations. The relentless impact of climate change has intensified the danger posed by wildfires in Greece, with the country experiencing its hottest June day earlier this month.
Evacuations have been enforced in multiple villages across the Peloponnese, with aircraft and emergency teams working round the clock to combat the blazes. In the Ahaia area, residents have been forced to flee as flames encroach on homes, while efforts are underway to contain fires near a lignite mine. Additionally, a blaze in Saronida, south of Athens, was successfully subdued with helicopter assistance, allowing the reopening of a major road.
As the situation unfolds, wildfires have also erupted along the national highway connecting Athens to Thessaloniki and on the island of Kefalonia. The Greek Air Force has deployed resources for firefighting missions throughout the country, striving to bring the raging infernos under control. While the weekend may bring a slight reprieve with diminishing winds, the threat looms large as the heatwave persists.
In tandem with the wildfires, southeast Europe is grappling with power outages, affecting Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania. Public transportation services have been disrupted, internet connections severed, and individuals stranded in elevators as the scorching heatwave tightens its grip on the region. The collective efforts of emergency responders and communities are being tested amidst a relentless battle against the unyielding forces of nature.
