In his monthly televised address to the nation, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin put forward bold initiatives to address pressing issues in the country. He proposed the legalization of casinos as a solution to combat underground gambling activities and create a regulated industry under government control. This move aims to bring in high-spending tourists to integrated entertainment complexes and generate significant tax revenue, providing a boost to the economy.

Additionally, Srettha advocated for the construction of a nuclear power plant to alleviate the burden of high electricity costs on the public. Despite acknowledging the challenges of public perception and concerns about plant safety, he emphasized the long-term benefits in terms of lower energy generation costs and reduction of carbon emissions to meet Thailand's net zero goals.

The proposal for legalized casinos has gained support from a majority in the House of Representatives, with plans to introduce a draft bill to the cabinet soon. The Finance Ministry's Deputy Minister, Julapun Amornvivat, highlighted consensus among various agencies on the positive economic impact of the casino complexes.

These progressive measures align with Thailand's recent steps towards a more liberal society, exemplified by initiatives such as decriminalizing cannabis and legalizing same-sex marriages. By embracing these changes, Thailand aims to revitalize its tourism industry post-pandemic and foster economic growth while also addressing environmental concerns through sustainable energy practices.
