Switzerland is facing a state of emergency as heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc across the country, leading to landslides, flooding, and widespread damage. The Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology has warned of continued flood risks, with the potential for further landslides looming large due to already saturated soil unable to absorb additional rainfall.
The canton of Graubünden in southeast Switzerland has been particularly hard hit, with videos and images showing overflowing rivers, a collapsed motorway, and debris covering parts of the Misox valley. The famous tourist town of Zermatt, near the iconic Matterhorn, was temporarily cut off from the rest of the country as routes were closed. However, rail services have since resumed, providing some relief.
Tragically, emergency authorities have reported the loss of life, with one man confirmed dead after being swept away by a rockslide. President Viola Amherd expressed shock at the extent of the damage, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
Swiss Army personnel have been mobilized to assist in search and rescue efforts for missing individuals and the evacuation of those in affected areas. The recent spate of flooding comes on the heels of similar weather-related disasters in neighboring Germany, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance and preparedness in the face of increasingly unpredictable climatic events.
