Houston, the nation's fourth-largest city, is once again grappling with the aftermath of extreme weather as Hurricane Beryl made landfall, wreaking havoc on the coastal metropolis. With forceful winds and relentless rains, the storm knocked out power to approximately 85% of homes and businesses served by CenterPoint Energy Inc., plunging the majority of the city into darkness.

This latest blow comes as Houston continues to face a relentless barrage of natural disasters in 2024. The city, home to over 7 million residents, has endured a series of storms that have caused flooding, damage to buildings, and power outages lasting for days on end. The impacts of these events have been devastating, with at least two fatalities reported due to falling trees and numerous rescues from flooded vehicles.

The effects of climate change have exacerbated the situation, with Texas witnessing supercharged hurricanes, heatwaves, and wildfires in recent years. Houston, in particular, has borne the brunt of these extreme weather events, with floods, windstorms, and now Hurricane Beryl causing widespread destruction.

Despite the challenges, Mayor John Whitmire remains optimistic about the city's ability to recover. In a press conference, he reassured residents that efforts are underway to restore essential services promptly. As Houston rallies to overcome yet another natural disaster, the resilience and determination of its residents shine through, showcasing the city's unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
