As the Mediterranean region braces for scorching temperatures, Southeast France is set to join Spain and Italy in experiencing a sweltering heatwave on Friday, with temperatures expected to soar up to 40C. The escalating heat has heightened wildfire risks to the most extreme levels across the affected countries.
The city of Marseille and its surrounding areas are anticipated to be in the danger zone for wildfires in the coming week, with Italy and Spain also on high alert due to the prevailing weather conditions. In Greece, firefighters have been grappling with 52 blazes within a 24-hour period, and new fires have broken out in the northeast, aggravating the situation.
Climate change continues to exacerbate the intensity and frequency of heatwaves, leading to a surge in extreme weather phenomena such as storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires. This summer, Greece and the Balkans have borne the brunt of these adverse effects, while a wave of hot air originating from the Sahara Desert is now exerting its influence over much of the Mediterranean region.
In Spain, the southern city of Cordoba is expected to witness its hottest day of the week, with temperatures soaring as high as 43C. Similarly, Greece is forecasting maximum temperatures over the mainland through the weekend, prompting heightened vigilance and firefighting efforts in regions like Rodopis, Vilia, northwest of Athens, and Arcadia. Five Greek regions are currently on high wildfire alert for Saturday.
In Italy, the Ministry of Health has issued warnings of emergency heat wave conditions in 17 cities, including Rome, Florence, and Palermo. This has led to an increased demand for air-conditioning, driving up gas and power prices as residents seek relief from the scorching temperatures.
Meanwhile, London is set to experience its hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures expected to reach 31C. However, a significant cooling trend is anticipated over the weekend, providing some respite from the sweltering conditions that have gripped Southern Europe.
