Mercedes-Benz Group AG is undergoing a strategic restructuring, with a shift in EV sales projections and a focus on introducing a near-record number of new models in the next two years. Among these changes is the introduction of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 4MATIC Coupe, designed to combine elements from the C-Class and E-Class coupes that are now being phased out.
Recently, I had the opportunity to test drive the CLE 450 4MATIC around the bustling streets of Los Angeles, and the experience left me impressed by this elegant leap forward in automotive design. Featuring a refreshed exterior and a hybrid powertrain, the CLE 450 embodies the trend of high-end hybrids becoming sought-after options for discerning consumers.
Offered in two versions—the CLE 300 4MATIC and the more robust CLE 450 4MATIC—the latter, starting at $65,650, boasts a 375-horsepower inline-six turbocharged engine complemented by a 23-hp 48-volt mild hybrid system. This hybrid setup surpasses the power output of its predecessors, signaling Mercedes' commitment to high-end hybrids well into the future.
Despite the misconception that hybrid power always equates to improved fuel efficiency, the CLE 450 delivers respectable numbers of 23 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg in combined city-highway driving. While lacking an electric-only drive mode, the hybrid technology sets the CLE apart and adds a touch of eco-consciousness to its performance.
The redesigned appearance of the CLE is a notable highlight of this model. Its elongated body and refined front end present a more sculpted and modern aesthetic, departing from the previous rounded design language. The inclusion of advanced technology features like native apps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an array of driver assistance programs further elevate the driving experience.
Inside the cabin, the CLE offers ample space for both passengers and cargo, with increased headroom and trunk volume compared to its predecessors. However, the gleaming white leather interior may prove challenging to maintain, making darker trim options a more practical choice for potential buyers.
While the omission of the pillar-less door design from the E-Class coupe may disappoint some enthusiasts, the overall package of the 2024 Mercedes-Benz CLE 450 4MATIC Coupe undoubtedly represents a significant step forward in luxury automotive offerings.
