A scorching heat wave is currently engulfing eastern China, leading to heightened alerts in major cities like Shanghai and Hangzhou. In response to the sweltering conditions, Shanghai recently issued its second highest heat wave alert this week, predicting temperatures in some areas to soar above 40C (104F). The bustling metropolis, home to millions and a vital commercial and shipping hub, raised its first red heat caution of the year just days ago when temperatures matched this scorching level.

Meanwhile, Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province situated approximately 175 kilometers from Shanghai, experienced even more intense heat. At 2:35 p.m., temperatures peaked at an astonishing 41.9C, surpassing the previous record of 41.8C set on August 14, 2022, as confirmed by the Hangzhou Meteorological Bureau. This city, known for its vibrant e-commerce sector and hosting industry giants like Alibaba Group Holding, anticipates further spikes in temperature over the next 48 hours, potentially reaching a blistering 42C.

Throughout the summer, China's eastern, central, and western regions have endured severe weather anomalies, with climate change seen as a contributing factor. Following recent devastating rains that caused casualties, displacements, and extensive damage to infrastructure, the government escalated disaster relief efforts. Local authorities have issued warnings to businesses and residents alike, emphasizing the importance of fire safety measures during this extreme weather period. To manage the escalating demand for cooling systems, Shanghai authorities mandated the early shutdown of decorative lighting across the city.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Shanghai stands at 40.9C, documented initially in 1873 and matched in recent years. As the heat wave persists, communities across eastern China are bracing themselves for more challenges while collectively navigating the impacts of rising temperatures and changing climate patterns.
