In a recent interview with broadcaster Top Congo FM, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo made startling allegations against former President Joseph Kabila. Tshisekedi claimed that Kabila is supporting the Congo River Alliance (AFC), a group backing the M23 rebellion in the eastern part of the country. This revelation comes amidst escalating tensions and violence in the region, with over 1.8 million people displaced due to the M23 insurgency since 2021.

The United States recently imposed sanctions on the AFC, citing its role in fueling political instability, violent conflict, and civilian displacement in the region. Tshisekedi's accusations against Kabila have further intensified the political turmoil in the country, with Kabila's camp dismissing the President's claims as "nonsense" and maintaining a stoic silence in response.

The M23 rebellion, allegedly supported by neighboring Rwanda, claims to be fighting for the rights of Congolese of Tutsi heritage. However, the conflict has led to widespread displacement and suffering among civilians, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

Despite ongoing hostilities, a ceasefire agreement brokered by Angola and endorsed by Rwanda and Congo recently came into effect. Tshisekedi praised the efforts of Angolan President Joao Lourenco and former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta in facilitating the peace process, expressing optimism about the prospects for a lasting resolution to the conflict.

However, the President criticized a parallel peace initiative led by Kenya, accusing current President William Ruto of mismanagement and bias towards Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Tshisekedi highlighted the need for concerted international efforts to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.

As tensions continue to simmer and the humanitarian situation deteriorates, the allegations leveled by President Tshisekedi against former President Kabila have further complicated the already complex political landscape in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The fate of the country hangs in the balance as regional powers and international partners strive to bring an end to the cycle of violence and instability plaguing the embattled nation.
