Hurricane Ernesto is on a destructive path, making its presence known as it heads towards Bermuda after wreaking havoc in Puerto Rico. With winds of 85 miles per hour, Ernesto poses a serious threat as it approaches the British territory. The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for Bermuda, urging residents to complete preparations to safeguard lives and property before the storm's arrival late on Friday.
In Puerto Rico, the aftermath of Ernesto has left a trail of destruction, with hundreds of thousands of residents still without power. LUMA Energy, the main power supplier, reported that about 410,000 homes and businesses were without electricity, highlighting the widespread impact of the storm. Despite the relatively lower magnitude of the storm's impact in some areas, many residents like Vanessa Toro expressed frustration over the prolonged power outages.
As Ernesto continues its northward trajectory, it is expected to veer well west of the U.S. East Coast. However, the storm's effects are anticipated to be felt in the form of life-threatening surf and rip currents across the region. This comes amid an active hurricane season, with Ernesto being the fifth named storm.
Hurricane Beryl, the season's first Category 5 storm, set records in the Atlantic before causing devastation in the Caribbean and Texas Gulf Coast. Meanwhile, slow-moving Debby recently hit Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane, further underscoring the intensity of the ongoing hurricane season.
With Bermuda bracing for Ernesto's impact and regions along the U.S. East Coast on alert for dangerous surf conditions, the focus remains on preparedness and safety measures as the Atlantic hurricane season continues to unfold.
