In a strategic move to meet the impending European Union regulations on traceability and deforestation-free production, Intercontinental Exchange Inc. (ICE) has announced a groundbreaking partnership. The exchange's latest initiative, the Commodity Traceability Service, will leverage Space Intelligence's advanced satellite mapping capabilities to determine whether cocoa and coffee growing areas have undergone deforestation post-2020. Set to be launched later this year, this platform aims to address the traceability requirements set by the EU, which have created significant disruptions in the cocoa and coffee sectors.

Clive de Ruig, President of ICE Benchmark Administration, emphasized the shift from optional sustainability practices to compulsory regulatory compliance in the industry. He highlighted ICE's dedication to providing essential infrastructure to support markets in this evolving landscape. With the EU mandate coming into effect on December 30th, it will be mandatory for various commodities marketed in the bloc to be traceable and cultivated on land that has not been deforested after 2020.

Cocoa and coffee, being crucial commodities with the EU as their primary market, have been the initial focus of ICE's Commodity Traceability Service. However, de Ruig revealed that this platform is just the starting point, hinting at potential expansion to include other products affected by the EU's deforestation regulations.

The Commodity Traceability Service recently commenced a pilot phase, utilizing a unique methodology developed by Meridia Land BV, a leading agricultural technology company. This approach allows businesses to ensure EU compliance by submitting the coordinates of a specific farm plot. Over 50 companies have shown interest in participating in the ongoing platform trial, with 18 already committing to trial agreements.

ICE's investment in Space Intelligence's recent Series A funding round underscores its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the agricultural sector. As the industry gears up for heightened regulatory scrutiny, ICE's Commodity Traceability Service stands out as a pioneering solution that promises to set new standards for transparency and accountability in supply chain management.
