In a strategic move to solidify its position in Europe's electric vehicle (EV) market, BYD Co. has announced the acquisition of German distributor Hedin Electric Mobility. The agreement, set to be finalized in the fourth quarter of this year, involves the takeover of BYD’s flagship stores in Stuttgart and Frankfurt as part of the deal with parent company Hedin Mobility, a prominent Swedish dealership chain.
While specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, pending regulatory approval, the acquisition signals BYD's commitment to expanding its reach in Europe amidst intensifying competition. Chinese EV manufacturers, including BYD and SAIC Motor Corp.'s MG brand, have faced challenges in penetrating the European market due to factors such as fluctuating demand and tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. Notably, registrations of Chinese EVs in Europe saw a noteworthy decline in July, with Chinese companies capturing only a 9.9% share of the overall EV market.
Since 2022, Hedin Electric Mobility has served as BYD’s general importer in Germany, supplying vehicles and components to approximately 30 BYD dealers across the country. By taking over this established business, BYD gains the capability to directly distribute vehicles to dealers, granting more flexibility in pricing and ensuring enhanced availability of its cars in Europe's largest automotive market.
Importantly, BYD intends to maintain Hedin Mobility’s German dealerships as key partners, emphasizing continuity and cooperation within its network. This bold move underscores BYD's strategic vision to navigate the complexities of the European EV landscape and strengthen its foothold in a dynamic and competitive market.
