Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has emphasized the urgency for the government to address concerns raised by the European Union to prevent any potential disruptions to critical subsidies. The EU has expressed apprehensions regarding Slovakia following the dismantling of a special prosecutor's office responsible for tackling significant corruption cases, including those related to EU funds. This has prompted the EU to contemplate action against Slovakia for what it perceives as a deterioration in the rule of law within the nation.
Pellegrini stressed the immediate need for the government to take decisive action by amending the criminal code to reassure the EU that all financial interests are safeguarded against corruption and criminal activities in Slovakia. With EU subsidies constituting 80% of public investments in the country, maintaining a solid relationship with the EU is crucial, particularly as Slovakia already faces challenges with its budget deficit.
Prime Minister Robert Fico's recent changes to the criminal code and the dissolution of the special prosecutor's office have come under scrutiny from Brussels since his return to power. Fico, who survived an assassination attempt earlier this year, attributes the tense environment to hostility propagated by the media and opposition groups.
In response to the escalating situation, the Slovak government has expressed readiness to make amendments to the criminal code pertaining to EU financial interests. Deputy Prime Minister Peter Kmec has assured ongoing discussions with the European Commission to align statutes of limitations and criminal penalties. Kmec emphasizes the strong political will to address these issues promptly, expressing optimism that a resolution on the rule of law concerns can be achieved in the foreseeable future.
The collaborative efforts between the Slovak government and the EU signify a commitment to finding a mutually beneficial solution to protect the integrity of EU subsidies in Slovakia, ensuring transparency and combating corruption effectively.
