Following the landfall of Hurricane Rafael as a Category 3 storm, the country was plunged into darkness as the power grid collapsed. Despite efforts by electrical workers to restore electricity, significant parts of the grid remained offline, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Adding to the woes, the southeastern region of the island was struck by consecutive earthquakes, with magnitudes of 4.0 and 6.8. President Miguel Diaz-Canel reported mudslides, damaged homes, and further complications to the electricity restoration efforts. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties from the seismic activity.

These natural disasters come at a time when Cuba is reeling from a deep economic downturn, worsened by tighter US sanctions and the crippling blow dealt by the Covid-19 pandemic to the tourism sector. The recent power outages have sparked rare public protests, with frustrated residents expressing their discontent by banging pots and pans in some areas.

The Cuban government has responded by taking a heavy-handed approach, with the attorney general's office confirming the detention of individuals in Havana, Mayabeque, and Ciego de Avila for allegedly disrupting public peace and showing aggression towards authorities.

The country's power infrastructure, already strained due to aging facilities and fuel shortages, has struggled to meet the energy demands of a shrinking population. Cuba has witnessed a significant population decline, losing 10% of its residents since 2021, exacerbating the challenges faced in restoring normalcy after the recent string of disasters.
