French prosecutors have made a bold move by requesting prison time and a five-year ban from politics for far-right leader Marine Le Pen and her National Rally (RN) party. The accusations stem from allegations of misusing European Parliament funds to pay staff who were working for RN in France, charges that Le Pen and her party vehemently deny.
After a lengthy six-week hearing at the Paris criminal court, the prosecution announced on Wednesday their request for a sentence of five years of imprisonment, with three years suspended for Le Pen, as well as a five-year ban from politics. Additionally, the RN could face a fine of €2 million, while Le Pen herself could be fined €300,000.
The move by the prosecutors, which includes a request for immediate execution of the ineligibility sentence, has sparked outrage and claims of political persecution from Le Pen and her supporters. Le Pen described the request as an attack on democracy and a clear attempt to exclude her from the political scene unfairly.
Despite the backlash, the prosecutors maintain that the case is about upholding the law and ensuring that all citizens are equal before it. The severity of the proposed sentence has prompted the RN to launch a social media campaign in support of Le Pen, with party officials rallying behind the hashtag #jesoutiensmarine ("I am behind Marine").
While Le Pen has received support from political allies and unexpected quarters like former French interior minister Gerald Darmanin, an ineligibility sentence, if confirmed, could have significant implications for her political future. As a key contender in previous presidential elections and a consistent vote-getter, being barred from running in future elections would be a major setback for Le Pen and her party.
With the next French presidential elections scheduled for 2027, the potential ban on Le Pen could reshape the political landscape in France. Despite her electoral achievements in the past and the growing popularity of her RN party, this legal challenge poses a significant threat to her aspirations for higher political office.
In a political environment marked by recent electoral surprises and strategic maneuvering, the fate of Le Pen and the RN remains uncertain. As the legal proceedings unfold and public opinion shifts, the outcome of this case could have far-reaching consequences for far-right politics in France and the broader European context.
