Torrential downpours have caused widespread devastation on the popular Greek tourist island of Rhodes, forcing authorities to impose a temporary ban on vehicles amidst the chaos brought by Storm Bora. This severe weather event follows the tragic death of a man in flash floods that swept through another Greek island in the northern Aegean just a day prior.

The streets of Rhodes are currently submerged under swirling waters, with homes, businesses, and roads all feeling the brunt of the relentless rainfall. Over 650 distress calls have been made to the fire service for assistance in pumping water out of flooded buildings, while at least 80 individuals have been evacuated to safer locations, particularly in the hard-hit city of Ialysos. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported as of now.

Residents of Rhodes are grappling with the aftermath of the flooding, as cars and debris strew the inundated streets, creating a scene of chaos and destruction. Efforts are underway to clear out the mud and water from affected properties, though the scale of the damage is immense. "The situation is tragic, some have lost their homes, some have fled, our cars are in a terrible condition," lamented Sofia Kanelli, a resident of Ialysos.

According to fire brigade spokesman Vassilis Varthakogiannis, the inclement weather is forecasted to persist into the following day, prolonging the challenges faced by the island's inhabitants. Varthakogiannis highlighted the changing weather patterns in recent years, attributing the sudden and intense rainfall to the impact of climate change. Greece has experienced a series of environmental crises, from devastating floods to raging wildfires, prompting scientists to designate the country as a "hot spot" for climate change.

The repercussions of the storm extended beyond Rhodes, with thunderstorms and heavy rain disrupting train services in mainland Greece, particularly affecting regions in the country's center and north. As the nation grapples with the aftermath of yet another natural disaster, resilience and unity will be key in navigating the challenges posed by extreme weather events.
