In an unprecedented show of unity, Romania's pro-European political parties have forged a coalition to combat the rise of nationalist forces in the country, just days before the crucial presidential election run-off on Sunday. Faced with the emergence of a Russia-friendly candidate, Calin Georgescu, as the front-runner, the previous ruling Social Democrats and Liberals, along with the reformist Save Romania Union, have come together in a bid to keep Romania on its pro-European trajectory.
The coalition agreement, signed on Wednesday, has the potential to secure a strong majority in the parliament, should they emerge victorious in the upcoming election. In a rare display of solidarity, the parties have called on the electorate to support a candidate who will uphold Romania's commitment to European values and integration, effectively endorsing the Save Romania Union leader Elena Lasconi in her face-off against Georgescu.
Georgescu's surprising success in the first round of voting, propelled by a campaign on the TikTok platform, has raised concerns within the political establishment. The release of declassified intelligence documents by the defense council, revealing suspected foreign interference in Georgescu's social media campaign, has only added fuel to the fire. The documents point to aggressive Russian hybrid attacks targeted at Romania, including cyber intrusions, hacks, and disinformation efforts.
Amid these revelations, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who trailed in the presidential race, has pledged his support to Lasconi and urged authorities to investigate the potential foreign meddling. Emphasizing the need to combat the divisive forces that have plagued Romania for years, Ciolacu stressed the importance of unity in continuing the country's European path.
As Romania braces for a pivotal election, the political landscape is marked by a fierce battle between pro-European forces and nationalist sentiments. The outcome of the presidential run-off on Sunday will not only shape the country's leadership but also determine its trajectory on the international stage.
