In a strategic move to enhance connectivity and promote regional cooperation, Guyana and Suriname have selected China Road & Bridge Corp. to spearhead the construction of a groundbreaking $236 million bridge that will span the Corentyne River and link the two neighboring South American nations. The decision was announced by Guyana's Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, who revealed that the project will be financially supported through a 50-50 cost-sharing agreement between Guyana and Suriname.
The proposed 1.1 kilometer-long bridge, expected to take approximately three years to complete, is set to be a significant infrastructure development that will facilitate better transportation and trade between Guyana and Suriname. Both countries have approached the Chinese government to provide funding for the project, with details of the financing arrangement yet to be finalized.
The partnership between Guyana, Suriname, and China underscores a collaborative effort to promote economic growth and connectivity in the region. The bridge project signifies a major milestone in enhancing bilateral relations and fostering greater integration between the two South American nations. With the construction set to commence once financing is secured, the bridge is poised to become a symbol of cross-border cooperation and progress in the region.
