An informal consultation hosted by Thailand brought together top diplomats and senior representatives from countries including China, India, and Laos, where Myanmar's Foreign Minister Than Swe outlined the junta's roadmap towards holding elections next year. The meeting underlined the importance of restoring normalcy in Myanmar, which has been embroiled in unrest since the military coup led by Min Aung Hlaing in 2021.

Preparations for the upcoming election include tasks such as conducting a population census, registering political parties (currently 53 in total), and inviting international election observers. However, the junta's plans face challenges, with rebel groups and Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party expressing hesitation towards the process.

The meeting, initiated by Thailand, signifies a significant step in addressing the Myanmar crisis collectively. Neighboring countries emphasized the need for peace and stability in Myanmar, calling for an end to violence from all parties. The involvement of all stakeholders, including the junta, reflects a shared interest in finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing turmoil.

As the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) convenes to review the Five-Point Consensus, Thailand's role in leading diplomatic efforts for Myanmar is crucial. The country shares a border with Myanmar and relies on its resources, making the crisis a direct concern. Additionally, border clashes have led to an influx of displaced individuals seeking refuge in Thailand, adding to the complexity of the situation.

Since the coup, over 6,000 civilians have lost their lives, with thousands more in junta custody. The urgency to address the crisis and work towards a sustainable solution is evident, with regional cooperation proving to be a vital component in the path towards stability in Myanmar.
