In a move to prevent far-right forces from gaining power, Romania's pro-European parties are intensifying efforts to form a new government after resolving recent disputes. The Social Democrats, the leading party in the recently elected parliament, have returned to the negotiating table with the junior Liberal Party and minority representatives. Hunor Kelemen, representing ethnic Hungarians, confirmed the resumption of discussions, indicating a potential breakthrough in coalition talks.

President Klaus Iohannis is scheduled to conduct formal consultations with the parties on Sunday, signaling a possible agreement. With a pressing need to address a growing budget deficit and organize a new presidential election following a court decision annulling the previous one due to allegations of Russian interference, the urgency for a stable government is paramount.

Although the Social Democrats temporarily withdrew from negotiations due to disagreements with former coalition partners over fiscal policies, their reentry suggests progress towards forming a coalition. However, challenges still loom large in the negotiations.

While the possibility of a formal nomination for prime minister looms, Social Democratic spokesman Lucian Romascanu emphasized the presence of numerous competent candidates within the party for the position. Meanwhile, deputy leader Paul Stanescu is advocating for Marcel Ciolacu to remain as the prime minister, showcasing the internal dynamics within the party.

As Romania grapples with its deepest political crisis in decades, the outcome of these coalition talks will not only shape the country's government but also play a crucial role in safeguarding its pro-European stance in the face of rising far-right concerns.
