In a weekend box office showdown, Paramount Global's film studio celebrated a victorious win as "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" zoomed past the competition, raking in an impressive $62 million in ticket sales in the US and Canada. The highly anticipated sequel surpassed expectations, outshining Walt Disney Co.'s "Mufasa: The Lion King," which debuted with $35 million.
Despite falling slightly short of Box Office Pro's forecasted $70 million, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" solidified its position as a box office powerhouse, building on the success of its predecessors based on the popular Sega Corp. video-game franchise. With a total of over $725 million in box office revenue and $180 million in home entertainment sales from the franchise, Paramount is doubling down on its investment in kids' properties under Co-Chief Executive Officer Brian Robbins. The studio has already announced plans for a fourth installment set to hit theaters in 2027.
On the other hand, Disney's "Mufasa: The Lion King" faced a rocky start, trailing behind expectations with estimates of at least $50 million in ticket sales. While the film saw better international success with $87.2 million from overseas markets, its domestic performance raised doubts about the future of The Lion King franchise. The latest installment, a prequel exploring the backstory of a young lion destined for leadership, received mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike.
Disney's unexpected stumble with "Mufasa" marks a pause in the studio's recent string of blockbuster hits, including "Inside Out 2," "Deadpool & Wolverine," and "Moana 2." As the industry eagerly awaits the release of Disney's latest offering, "A Complete Unknown," a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothee Chalamet under subsidiary Searchlight Pictures, the competitive landscape of Hollywood continues to evolve with each new box office battle.
