President Nicolas Maduro announced in an interview published by Mexican media outlet La Jornada that Venezuela's economy is expected to grow by over 9% in 2024. This growth comes after a 5.5% increase in 2023, marking a significant improvement in the country's economic performance.
Maduro highlighted that the projected growth is supported by scientific, statistical, and technical data, indicating a robust expansion in the gross domestic product. He specifically noted substantial growth in the real economy and the hydrocarbons sector, signaling positive developments in key areas of the Venezuelan economy.
In recent years, Venezuela has grappled with a severe economic crisis characterized by triple-digit inflation and a mass exodus of its population in search of better opportunities abroad. To address these challenges, the government initiated measures in 2019 to loosen controls on the private sector, fostering an environment of informal dollarization to support vital sectors of the economy.
While this move provided some relief and stability, experts caution that additional strategies may be necessary for a comprehensive economic recovery. Despite the positive growth projections for 2024, analysts suggest that sustained efforts and structural changes will be vital to ensure long-term economic stability and prosperity in Venezuela.
The full interview with President Maduro, conducted by Spanish journalist Ignacio Ramonet, is scheduled to air on Venezuelan state television later today.
