In a groundbreaking move, United Airlines has announced plans to roll out Elon Musk's Starlink for in-flight internet services starting in February. The airline aims to kick off this initiative by introducing the connectivity on a commercial flight operated by Embraer E-175 aircraft in the upcoming spring season. United's strategy includes equipping its entire two-cabin regional fleet with Starlink by the end of 2025, with the first Starlink-enabled aircraft to be deployed on major routes by the close of the year.
While the initial plan was to offer free Wi-Fi to all passengers, United has now decided to provide complimentary access exclusively to its MileagePlus members. Despite this change, the airline is committed to making Starlink available on all its flights, signifying a significant step towards enhancing the in-flight experience for its customers.
Last year, United forged a partnership with Starlink to implement in-flight internet services across its expansive fleet of 1,000+ aircraft over the next few years. By teaming up with Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, United joins multiple airlines in adopting cutting-edge satellite-based internet solutions to extend connectivity beyond traditional boundaries. Starlink's approach aligns with its mission to bridge the digital divide and cater to communities worldwide lacking adequate internet access.
Notably, Starlink has previously secured deals with Hawaiian Airlines and JSX, showcasing its dedication to expanding its footprint in the aviation sector. As United paves the way for a seamless and connected travel experience, passengers can look forward to a future where staying connected above the clouds is more accessible than ever before.
