In response to the escalating prevalence of dementia within its rapidly aging population, China has taken proactive measures by initiating a comprehensive national plan to tackle the issue. As the number of individuals aged 60 and above in China is projected to surge by over 40% by 2035, equivalent to the combined populations of Britain and the United States, authorities are recognizing dementia as a pressing societal concern that necessitates urgent attention.
The collaborative effort involves fifteen government departments, notably including the National Health Commission, which have collectively devised a strategic blueprint comprising seven pivotal tasks to be implemented by 2030. Central to this plan is the establishment of a robust prevention and control framework targeting dementia in its various stages, from prevention to rehabilitation and care.
Recognizing the imperative of early intervention, the plan underscores the implementation of widespread cognitive screenings for the elderly population, enabling timely identification and support for individuals at risk. Currently, China is home to over 16 million individuals grappling with dementia, encompassing Alzheimer's disease as the predominant form. This staggering figure accounts for almost 30% of the global total, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this escalating healthcare challenge.
The national plan also emphasizes the expansion of care services specifically tailored for elderly individuals with dementia. By setting a goal for dedicated dementia care units to constitute more than 50% of elderly care facilities, as well as aiming to train 15 million dementia care personnel by 2030, the initiative seeks to enhance both the quality and accessibility of support services for those affected by the condition.
In light of the rising demographic of elderly individuals in China and the subsequent surge in dementia cases, the implementation of this national plan signals a critical step towards safeguarding the well-being of the elderly population and alleviating the burden on families and caregivers. With a focus on comprehensive care, early detection, and specialized support services, China's concerted efforts mark a significant stride in addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by the growing dementia crisis within the country.
