In response to heightened tensions and security threats, the German military has announced the establishment of a new division dedicated solely to territorial defence. This strategic reorganization, set to take effect in April, will consolidate all existing reserve units under direct army command without increasing the overall number of troops in the German forces, which currently stands at around 180,000 soldiers.
Scheduled to come into operation on April 1, 2025, this new division underscores Germany's commitment to bolstering its defensive capabilities in the face of escalating risks. As NATO remains on high alert - warning of potential adversarial actions, particularly from Russia - the German Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, has expressed concerns that a direct attack on NATO borders by Moscow could materialize within the next four years.
With the fourth division specifically designated for homeland defence, its core mission will revolve around safeguarding critical infrastructure, such as ports, railways, and vital supply lines. This restructuring aims to enhance Germany's readiness to counter any potential threats, including cyberattacks and acts of sabotage against essential national assets.
As Germany prepares to play a pivotal role as a key logistics hub in any potential conflict scenario with Russia, the deployment of tens of thousands of reinforcement troops from allied NATO nations through German territory is anticipated. By fortifying its territorial defence mechanisms and optimizing command structures, Germany is taking proactive steps to ensure its security and resilience in an increasingly complex and unpredictable geopolitical landscape.
