An Arctic blast is poised to envelop a vast swath of the United States starting Friday, ushering in bone-chilling temperatures below freezing that will impact millions of Americans across almost all contiguous states. The National Weather Service has forecast temperatures plummeting below 10 degrees Fahrenheit in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with the central Plains and Midwest seeing teens and parts of the South hovering near 30 degrees on Saturday. This icy front is then expected to sweep towards the East Coast and the Southeast by Monday, plunging even the Southern Plains into sub-zero wind chills from Sunday night onwards.

Meteorologist Zack Taylor of the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center has warned that the bitter cold snap, set to persist for several days, could lead to "life-threatening" risks of hypothermia and frostbite. The underlying cause of this deep freeze is attributed to a polar vortex, an upper-level jet stream that, when weakened and expanded, ushers frigid air masses from the North and South Poles into the US and Canada.

As a result of the impending deep chill, President-elect Donald Trump has announced that his inauguration on Monday will be moved indoors due to the severe cold. Temperatures are anticipated to peak at a mere 23 degrees in Washington, D.C., exacerbated by biting wind chills. Additionally, states from Virginia up to New England could brace for heavy snowfall alongside icy temperatures, with major cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston potentially facing several inches of snowfall.

While the Northern regions prepare for significant snow accumulation, Southern states are also on alert for a separate storm projected to begin Monday evening across parts of Texas, potentially extending southwards to the Gulf Coast with the possibility of snow and ice. Meteorologist Taylor emphasized the need for vigilance, especially among communities less accustomed to winter weather, as such conditions can present unique challenges for safety and infrastructure.
