In a significant move towards streamlining Nigeria's tax system, a committee tasked with overhauling the current structure has announced that new rules are poised to take effect in July. Spearheaded by Taiwo Oyedele, who heads the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, the reforms aim to consolidate and simplify tax collection by reducing over 60 separate taxes and levies to just six.
The upcoming legislation is expected to be passed in this quarter, following which additional preparations for implementation will be undertaken in the ensuing months. Oyedele emphasized the importance of early notice to taxpayers, allowing them to gear up, enhance their capacity, and transition smoothly by July.
However, certain proposals by the committee have been met with controversy. For instance, the suggestion to incrementally raise value-added tax to 15% and simultaneously lower company taxes to 25% over a six-year period faces opposition from Nigeria's influential state governors.
Notwithstanding these disagreements, the committee remains open to all viewpoints, including those expressed by the governors. Oyedele expressed gratitude towards the governors for aligning with the overall tax reform agenda, underscoring a spirit of collaboration and progress.
Looking ahead, with the support of the governors and ongoing deliberations in the legislative realm, the committee is optimistic about finalizing the tax overhaul for the betterment of Nigeria's economic landscape.
