Cuban police responded with violence to protests in the town of Caimanera, near the Guantanamo Bay prison, where demonstrators were demanding better living conditions and freedom. Following the protests, the Cuban government shut down the internet across the entire island to prevent the spread of news about the demonstrations. The US Embassy in Havana condemned the crackdown and the internet shutdown, saying that security forces had "responded violently to peaceful protests in the town of Caimanera, beating citizens for demanding human rights." Activist groups reported that at least five people were detained by police.

Caimanera, a town that lies just across Guantanamo Bay from the US naval base, is known as "the first trench against imperialism". Foreigners and even Cubans need special permission to visit the town because of its proximity to the US base. The town has been hit by widespread shortages that have affected the rest of the country, with residents complaining of fuel shortages, food scarcity, and a lack of medicine.

Cuba's government has blamed the economic sanctions imposed by the US for the disruptions, but has also conceded that countries that traditionally supply the island with oil have not been sending promised fuel. In response to the protests, the government blamed "counterrevolutionary media" in the United States for trying to portray the demonstrations as the beginning of a large-scale uprising against the communist-run government.

Caimanera's residents have long complained of their isolation, but the government has given them extra rations including milk and meat, which are considered luxuries by many Cubans. However, even the town has not been spared from the worsening shortages. The crackdown on protesters in Caimanera highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Cubans, as they struggle with a lack of basic necessities and limited freedom of expression.
