On the idyllic Greek island of Santorini, families scrambled to leave via ferries and additional flights on Monday as a series of tremors continued to rock the region for the fourth consecutive day. The ongoing seismic activity between Santorini and Amorgos in the Aegean Sea has prompted the closure of schools on multiple islands, including Santorini, Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi until the end of the week.

With tremors persisting, some exceeding a magnitude of 4, the local populace has been urged to avoid indoor spaces and small ports. Disaster response teams have been deployed as a precautionary measure amid the heightened seismic activity. While permanent residents on Santorini are accustomed to earthquakes, visitors and those on the island for work have been notably anxious, with many opting to depart.

Tzanis Lignos, who managed to secure passage for his family, described the relentless seismic activity as distressing, causing sleepless nights and constant anxiety. He expressed that the continuous earthquakes had taken a toll on the entire island community. Similarly, Zoi Lignou, a 72-year-old resident, highlighted the intensity of the situation, noting the decision to leave due to the unrelenting nature of the tremors.

To aid in the evacuation efforts, Aegean Airlines has scheduled additional flights to and from Santorini at the request of Greece's Civil Protection Ministry. Experts, including tectonic geologist and disaster management professor Efthymios Lekkas, have cautioned that the seismic activity is likely to persist for the foreseeable future, potentially leading to an extended period of tremors.

Given Greece's geological landscape and history of seismic events, the current situation on Santorini is a reminder of the region's powerful volcanic past. While mild volcanic activity has also been observed near Santorini recently, experts have clarified that it is unrelated to the ongoing series of earthquakes, which have been unsettling residents and visitors alike on the picturesque island.
