Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute B. Egede, has put forth a proposal to hold elections on March 11 in the wake of heightened global attention on the island after US President Donald Trump expressed interest in acquiring it from Denmark. Egede emphasized the need for unity among Greenlanders in a Facebook post, acknowledging the unprecedented challenges faced by the nation.

While a majority of the current lawmakers in Greenland’s parliament are in favor of increasing independence from Denmark, recent polls indicate that the island’s population is largely against leaving the Danish realm to align with the US. The tension between Copenhagen and Washington escalated when Trump sought to assert control over Greenland for national security reasons, threatening tariffs on Denmark if his demands were not met. In response, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has sought support from European allies to counter this pressure.

The political landscape in Greenland has traditionally been dominated by the social democrat Siumut party since the inception of home rule in 1979. However, in recent years, the leftist Inuit Ataqatigiit party, led by Egede, has been gaining influence. Both Egede and Frederiksen have reiterated that Greenland is not for sale, emphasizing that the island’s future should be determined by its people. As the election comes into focus, the decision-making power over Greenland’s fate remains in the hands of its residents.
