Amidst escalating transatlantic trade tensions fueled by US President Donald Trump's tariff threats, the European Union (EU) is strategically preparing to negotiate a favourable outcome. Trump's recent decision to delay imposing broad tariffs on Mexico and Canada has provided some reassurance to the EU, influencing the bloc's approach to respond proportionally to tariff threats without provoking further conflict with the US.

The EU's strategy is challenged by the lack of established contacts within the nascent US administration, as key trade positions await Senate approval. However, efforts to defuse conflicts, such as the impending dispute over steel and aluminum exports, are underway. Despite Trump's persistent criticism of the EU over trade deficits, the Commission remains prepared with retaliatory measures if necessary.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the EU's commitment to firm responses when targeted unfairly. The EU aims to improve bilateral relations with the US by proposing increased imports of liquefied natural gas, fertilizers, and weapons. Collaboration opportunities on China-related issues and addressing overcapacity, particularly in the steel sector, are also on the table.

The EU plans to mirror its 2018 trade clash playbook with the US, targeting politically sensitive constituencies with tariffs if needed. The temporary suspension of EU tariffs on US products is set to expire at the end of March, but an extension is likely to maintain a positive approach in negotiations with the US. Overall, the EU is cautiously navigating the trade landscape, seeking to avert further escalation while safeguarding its interests in the face of US trade policies.
