In a thrilling Champions League playoff clash, Club Brugge secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Atalanta with a stoppage-time penalty from substitute Gustaf Nilsson. The match started with an early goal from Brugge's Ferran Jutgla, who confidently put his team ahead with a well-taken strike in the 15th minute. However, Atalanta fought back, with Mario Pasalic equalizing just before halftime with a header from a delightful cross by Davide Zappacosta.
The game was full of chances for both sides, with Atalanta's Lazar Samardzic coming close to scoring but narrowly missing the target. Brugge's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet made crucial saves to keep his team in the game, including denying Zappacosta's header. The contest remained tense as Atalanta's Charles De Ketelaere tested Mignolet with a late strike, only to be thwarted by the goalkeeper.
The defining moment came in injury time when Brugge was awarded a contentious penalty after Nilsson was brought down in the box by Atalanta's Isak Hien. Despite the VAR check, the spot-kick was upheld, and Nilsson calmly converted from the penalty spot to give Brugge the win. The victory sets up an exciting second leg, where Atalanta will look to overturn the deficit at home.
Atalanta, who finished ninth in the league phase, showed their quality throughout the match, while Brugge, who secured the final playoff spot on goal difference, demonstrated their resilience. The return fixture promises to be a showdown between two determined teams, with the winner advancing to face either Lille or Aston Villa in the Champions League Round of 16.
