Opposition lawmakers in Argentina are urging for an impeachment trial against President Javier Milei following a controversial cryptocurrency promotion that ended in disaster. The incident began when Milei endorsed the little-known crypto coin $LIBRA on social media platform X, causing its value to surge to nearly $5 per coin. However, the value soon plummeted to under $1, leading to speculation of a potential "rug pull" scheme orchestrated by the developers.
The Argentine fintech chamber expressed concerns over the situation, highlighting the possibility of fraudulent activities within the cryptocurrency market. Lawmaker Leandro Santoro, a member of the opposition coalition, condemned the scandal and called for impeachment proceedings against President Milei for his involvement in the promotion of the volatile cryptocurrency.
Milei swiftly removed his post on X after learning of the abrupt price crash, emphasizing that he had no prior knowledge of the project's details and had no direct affiliation with $LIBRA. In a statement, Milei stated, "I was not aware of the details of the project and once I found out, I decided to not continue giving it publicity."
The controversy has sparked a national debate in Argentina, with concerns about the president's judgment and potential implications for the country's financial reputation. As calls for accountability grow louder, the future of President Milei's leadership hangs in the balance, with the possibility of an impeachment trial looming in Congress.
