In a remarkable achievement, Taylor Swift has once again been crowned the global recording artist of the year for 2024 by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). This prestigious title marks the fifth time that the acclaimed musician has received this honour from the organization that represents the recorded music industry.
Swift's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," not only secured the top spot on four IFPI charts - global album, global vinyl album, global streaming album, and global album sales - but also solidified her position as a powerhouse in the music industry. With a commanding lead on the global album sales chart, boasting 5.6 million units sold, Swift outshone her competitors. K-pop sensation ENHYPEN's "Romance: Untold" claimed the second position with 3.4 million units sold.
The success of Swift's record-breaking "Eras" tour, which became the first tour to surpass $1 billion in revenue, contributed to a resurgence of interest in her previous works. As a result, several of Swift's past records made appearances on the 2024 vinyl album and streaming album charts, further showcasing her enduring appeal to fans worldwide.
IFPI Chief Executive, Victoria Oakley, expressed her admiration for Swift's accomplishments, stating, "This has been a monumental year for Taylor, and the overwhelming connection that fans from every corner of the globe have with her exceptional music is truly remarkable."
Having previously claimed the title in 2014, 2019, 2022, and 2023, Swift now holds the record for the most wins since the award's inception 12 years ago. The IFPI global artist chart, which determines the recipient of the award, analyzes an artist's global sales across streaming, downloads, and physical music formats throughout the calendar year, encompassing their entire discography.
While Canadian rapper Drake and K-pop sensation SEVENTEEN secured the second and third positions on the 2024 global artist chart, it is clear that Taylor Swift's unparalleled talent and unwavering fan base have solidified her status as a dominant force in the music industry for yet another year.
