Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has taken a bold stand by moving to ban foreign governments and entities from intervening in her nation’s territory following the US designation of eight Latin American cartels and gangs as terrorist organizations. Sheinbaum, in a press briefing in Mexico City, emphasized that the Trump administration's targeting of these criminal groups should not be used as a justification for foreign interference in Mexico's affairs.
The proposed legislation, which will be submitted to Congress, aims to safeguard Mexico's sovereignty and prevent any undue external involvement in the country's internal affairs. Sheinbaum’s initiative reflects her commitment to maintaining a delicate balance between meeting US demands and upholding Mexican sovereignty in the face of threats of tariffs on Mexican goods.
Despite successfully deferring the imposition of tariffs by promising increased border security measures, Sheinbaum is resolute in her insistence that Mexico will not compromise its autonomy. She has also expressed her disapproval of US drone flights monitoring illegal activity across the border, in line with recent polls showing Mexican opposition to the use of US military force against drug traffickers and cartels.
In a parallel move, Canada has also announced measures to target cartels by designating seven as terrorist entities, a proactive strategy to avoid falling under potential US tariffs. Sheinbaum’s proposed bill explicitly prohibits any actions that challenge Mexico's integrity, independence, and sovereignty, citing examples such as coups d’etat, election interference, and incursions into Mexican territory.
Moreover, Sheinbaum revealed plans to expand legal action against US gun manufacturers to include sellers of firearms illegally trafficked into Mexico, underscoring her administration's commitment to curbing organized crime. The ongoing lawsuit against manufacturers like Smith & Wesson Brands Inc. aims to hold accountable those facilitating the flow of weapons to criminal groups within Mexico. Sheinbaum's proactive stance signals a staunch defense of Mexico’s sovereignty and an unwillingness to compromise on matters of national security.
