In a groundbreaking development, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced a monumental investment of $40 billion from the United Arab Emirates following the historic visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Rome. This significant partnership marks a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship between the two countries, transcending perceived boundaries and aligning strategic interests for a shared journey ahead.
The extensive investment is earmarked for key sectors such as artificial intelligence, data centers, sub-sea activities, renewable energy, and rare earths. Notably, it includes the implementation of the Mattei plan, spearheaded by Meloni, aimed at catalyzing development in Africa to address the root causes of migration, particularly across the Mediterranean. Moreover, a landmark trilateral project involving Italy, Albania, and the UAE to transport electricity via an undersea cable in the Adriatic was highlighted as a testament to the expanding collaboration.
The partnership also extends to defense and security cooperation, as outlined in a joint statement between Italy and the UAE. Cassa Depositi e Prestiti SpA, Italy’s state lender, inked a memorandum with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office to bolster mutual cooperation. Telecom Italia SpA and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, along with Enel SpA and Mastar, sealed agreements for establishing a tech hub and advancing renewable energy initiatives, respectively. Furthermore, Eni SpA joined hands with MGX Fund Management Ltd to pioneer sustainable data center projects, underscoring the commitment to innovation and sustainability in the digital age.
With these transformative agreements and collaborations across diverse sectors, the Italy-UAE partnership is set to pave the way for mutual growth and prosperity, fostering a new era of economic and technological advancement that transcends borders.
