In a move set to revolutionize the driving experience for Tesla owners in China, the electric car company is on the brink of introducing a software update that will unlock cutting-edge driver-assist capabilities. Similar to the Full Self-Driving features marketed in the US, the impending update will enable Tesla vehicles on Chinese roads to navigate city streets with enhanced automation.

Expected to roll out in the coming days, the update will empower Tesla owners who have invested 64,000 yuan in what Tesla terms as Full Self-Driving (FSD). Through this update, vehicles will be equipped to autonomously maneuver through city environments, including executing turns at intersections, adhering to traffic signals, changing lanes, and adjusting speeds. While marketed as self-driving, these features require continuous human oversight and intervention.

Tesla has conducted preliminary testing of the advanced driver-assistance system with its employees in China, who were required to sign confidentiality agreements. The company aims to assure customers that the system will progressively enhance its capabilities based on the vehicle model and configuration. Furthermore, Tesla plans to caution users that the effectiveness of certain features may vary.

Tesla's move to introduce advanced driver-assistance features in China comes after CEO Elon Musk's visit to Beijing last year, where discussions were held regarding deployment challenges. Collaborating with Chinese tech company Baidu Inc., Tesla has made strides in addressing data-security and privacy concerns, paving the way for the upcoming rollout of FSD features in China.

While driver-assistance technology is becoming increasingly prevalent in China, with competitors such as EV leader BYD Co. also entering the market, Tesla's foray into advanced automation systems signifies a significant step forward. Despite regulatory hurdles and engineering challenges faced by the company, Tesla remains committed to ushering in a new era of driving innovation in the Chinese automotive landscape.
